niebieskieucho Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 The 8 is disregarded in the following multiplicands: 12345679 x 9 = 111,111,111 12345679 x 18 = 222,222,222 12345679 x 27 = 333,333,333 12345679 x 36 = 444,444,444 12345679 x 45 = 555,555,555 12345679 x 54 = 666,666,666 12345679 x 63 = 777,777,777 12345679 x 72 = 888,888,888 12345679 x 81 = 999,999,999 And that is why the 8 revenged itself on the 1 ignoring it in a step-like product: 12345679 x 8 = 98,765,432 By the way, in this way you can check if your calculator calculates properly 4
Shadow Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Just out of curiosity, I tried out 987654321/123456789. I lol'd.
Fuzzwood Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I lol'd at you because of your puny 8-digit display.
Shadow Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I'm well aware that it's not exactly eight; a single look at the parity of the dividend proves the impossibility of the quotient ever being an even number. But that fact that it's an almost integer is in itself lolworthy; the fact that it's almost eight is roflworthy, in this context.

Well done I've read somewhere (Internet) that: 12345679 x 999,999,999 = 12345678987654321. This time only the nine turns out to be a looser. It appears only ones in the product. -- Ihad a dream that I was on the Moon, but I woke up during new moon andcouldn't ascertain where in fact I was Edited April 12, 2011 by niebieskieucho
Fuzzwood Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 That person horribly failed, the answer = 123,456,788,876,543,211
niebieskieucho Posted April 17, 2011 Author Posted April 17, 2011 That person horribly failed, the answer = 123,456,788,876,543,211 Nope. I've checked it twice.
Shadow Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 (edited) It's 1234567 9 x 999,999,999, not 123456789 x 999,999,999 Fuzzwood. Edited April 17, 2011 by Shadow
baric Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 (edited) adding x1 to the end gives it a nice symmetry! 12345679 x 8 = 98765432 x 1 Also, I'm not a big believer in mathematical flukes, so I tested this further... In Base 6, did you know that 1235 x 4 = 5432 x 1 So apparently it's purely an artifact of digital notation. Maybe that was already obvious to everyone, but I find it interesting.
