rocketman
If I hypothetically found 200+ lbs of fertlizer grade kno3 crystals in broken bags, which fell off a farm truck, on the side of a road last weekend and brought the stuff home in trash bags... What possible uses does KNO3 have besides the common pyro BP and sugar mixtues? What could i make out of 200 pounds of KNO3? I have heard that Nitric acid can be made from it, but where would i get the conc. H2SO4? Pb car batteries maybe? What other neat stuff can be synthesized from a large amount of KNO3? It seems to be very pure based on some testes i have conducted.
5614
hypothetically???? sounds like you mean it, is it a true story, you're soooo lucky if you did. http://www.thefintels.com/aer/experimentalpropellants.htm is about using KNO3 in rocket fuels. http://www.mailameal.com/dyn/d2025.11812.potassium.nitrate.kno3.lbs.high.grade.extra.fine.cms about buying rockets and kno3 http://www.totse.com/en/technology/science_technology/nitric.html is about making nitric acid using kno3 and some other things http://www.dpxpaint.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=112 is about making smoke bombs [you need kno3]
boris_73
ok do not use the stuff from totsie is just another form of the anarchist cookbook if you look though the post's on the first page about 5 lines down there is a whole topic on making nitric acid but the general mix is about 1parts potassium nitrate and two parts sulphuric acid it so it would be 98g of sulphuric acid 100% concentrated and 202g of potassium nitrate but seeing how 100% sulphuric acid is very hard to get i would use about 70-80% conc sulphuric acid for that you will need 83g sulphuric acid and 202g of potassium nitrate, to get 70-80% sulphuric acid get the sulphuric acid from a battery boil it off untill dense white fumes apper in the latter stages of boiling that will give you about 98% conc to dilute it and sulphuric acid to water, other wise it will spray conc sulphuric acid in your face, the density of 70% conc sulphuric acid is 1.61g/ml so say 200ml would weigh 322g so if you measure out 200ml of boiled then diluted sulphuric acid it should weigh 322g the rest is like i said in another post
budullewraagh
potassium nitrate is fun stuff. you can use it for it's oxidizing properties...makes good flames when mixed and ignited with organics, can be used as a propellant. also, of course you can make nitric, but you have to be very careful when doing so, as it evolves hydrogen nitrate gas. rocketman
Yeah, its a true story, and i know how lucky i am. I couldnt believe my eyes when i stopped to see what all the white powder was on the side of the road... I have been using KNO3 to make rocket fuel for awhile now and even have a website to document my experiments. check it out: http://www.angelfire.com/un/rocketman Most of the KNO3 will probably end up as rocket fuel, but i might try making nitric acid with it. r1dermon
hmmm...200+lbs of rocketfuel....me thinks....Z impulse motor!!!
rocketman
yeah, maybe i can still snatch the X Prize ! that would have to be one strong casing and nozzle design.
YT2095
you could also sell it back to the farmer and Make some Money too
demux
Duh... do you have to be a farmer where ever you live to buy fertiliser? Or are you just poor ;p

Von Klemmung
NOW I'm envious! First of all, even a Z motor wouldn't cut the mustard! You'd have to use our alphabet, buddy. Beyond the Z, there's an Æ (A with 3 dashes or an A and an E genespliced), an Ø (O with a slash) and an Å (A with a ring above it). That must be an Å motor (pronounced like the very first vocal sound in Oh = Å-oo) Enough linguistics for now (I could go on). Now I need to know if anyone has a good method for using four mortars to lift, say 30 pounds, and propel it out to a range of about a hundred feet horizontally. I'm counting on catching a fertilizer truck square on with a pine table!
Gilded
Dealing with pine tables is something that was never intended for mortals. Damn you Ikea, daaaamn yoooouuuu! And I thought I got over this thread but the fact that someone found a year supply of KNO3 still makes me cry.

Von Klemmung
Gilded, I stand corrected! Must we then consider The Pine Table as Sacred or An Abomination?
