dissolving tablets

I could just buy some plain jane alka-seltzer tabs, but it would be much more interesting to see if a similar effect(close as possible?) could be obtained from more common store bought/household items.

Some of you have probably heard of the object lesson about using time wisely, that involves using a large glass jar and several objects that represent things we spend all of our time on. Various items from large to small are used, and finally water is put into the jar. However, instead of using real small pebbles, I want to have something that will dissolve when the water is poured in. When the larger items are removed from the jar, the pebbles that should have been there are not.

Any thoughts?

Salt or sugar?

I made several test samples using mixtures of water and sugar, baking soda, and borax in differing quantities. I've done several different experiments with my preschool class using those items, which is why I thought of them first. I am waiting for them to dry sufficiently before trying to dissolve them.

Any further suggestions would be great!
