I know this is kinda a strange topic, but I have a debate coming up and I need some good resources.

The topic is-

Should marijuana be legalized for medical purposes?

Unfortunately, Im on the Aff, so I say "Yes", but I really dont know much about it. Does anyone have any resources or arguements on it?

Thanks

well i said yes because if it were used for a medical purpose, whilsts not in itself being health, it would make the person healthier (compared to how they were before the treatment)... ie. it would not be used for medical treatment if it didnt make the person better!

therefore, if it could possibly make the person better, then it should be legalised for that person's sake.

it shouldnt be legalised for the hell of doctors using it! but if it could be medically useful, then it should be legalised for that 'useful' purpose only.

This reminds me of a particular episode of the simpsons.........

Yes it should be allowed for medical usage. But if you do allow, Yes there will be misuse - its a twin-edged sword.

ok, does anyone have any links to some good arguements? I could use some good resouces to make some cards :)

i think the problem is that (with respect to marijuana) there are other drugs with comparable efficacy.

such as? Im afraid that my opposition will run not only that, but also the potential misuse of the medical marijuana. What arguement can I run against that? Anyone have any links, or resources?

Heres a good review: Lancet. 2004 Jul 24;364(9431):315-6. (medline link http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15276375)

Clin Rehabil. 2003 Feb;17(1):21-9. another decent clinical trial (medline link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12617376)

Another good one on treatmen resistant glaucoma: Eur J Neurosci. 2001 Jan;13(2):409-12. (medline link http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=11168547)

One last one, although I couldn't see the abstract so I'm not sure the outcome.

Neurology. 1999 Dec 10;53(9):2209-10. medline line (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=10599815).

Should get you started. Those are all peer-reviewed, professional journal articles, and are clinical trials.

Thanks!

I was thinking this for our plan- how does it sound? can you find any holes? Any arguements, or evidence that you would suggest?

We feel that a new Presidential Decision Directive should be formed to allow limited use of Marijuana, for only medical purposes with patients to which there is no alternative effective enough to help with the specific condition.

Ok, I thinks its pretty good but what about enforcement of the use of the drug?? What exactly stops patients from abusing the drug, or selling it on the street??

I say yes, and I also say yes for legalisation for recreational purposes. The gangs here make too much money off it, this could otherwise be going to the government as taxes, this tax money could then fund health care and addiction counceling.

Legalizing substances over other has the problem why allow some over the other ... the same arguments that illegalize substances like marijuana might as well be applied to substances that are currently allowed & legal.

Yes, alcohol and tobacco do far more health and social damage than marijuana, but if they made these illegal the government would lose all those taxes.... not to mention the backlash and the potential black markets, just look at the example from prohibition in the USA. The only difference between marijuana prohibition and alcohol prohibition is that alcohol was once highly popular while legal. Marijuana has only ever been highly popular while illegal.

Well what about marinol? That seems to be their favorite in terms of offering alternatives. Does anyone have any additional info about alternatives to Med. Marij?
