Brizig000 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I was trying to write a story and I was wondering on anyone's thought about the Earths Core being like a Van De Graaff-Generator. And all the week spots like Hawii and the fault lines get lightning. (like when one touches the outer glass generator spere) That heats up the surrounding rock and magma at random intervals which eventually explode into our atmosphere.
ResidentHero Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 This is a novel way to think of volcanoes erupting, and the book already has me interested. Unfortunately, lava (or magma, as it's called when it's inside the earth) does not come from the earth's core, it's actually from spots in the mantle. Now, I say spots because the mantle is not all fluid-y and full of magma; the mantle is solid, as is everything down to the earth's core which is molten iron. There are places, however, that have the right variables to create magma spots, such as the Hawaiian Islands. These sites explain it much better than I can, probably because they've researched it and such: The Short Version The Long Version I hope you can find a way to make this process work in your storyline!
Brizig000 Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 In the anallagy I have stated, the lightning, like a Van De graaff-generator, comes off of the center iron core and reaches sea level to ground itself out. The surrounding mantel including the crust heats up and forms lava in the areas where the lightning came off of the generator following a path to the volcanoes and fault lines.
