Superfast Military Aircraft Crashed in Pacific Ocean, DARPA Says

An unmanned military plane billed as the "fastest aircraft ever built" crashed into the Pacific Ocean today (Aug. 11) after a malfunction caused it to stop sending signals while flying at more than 20 times the speed of sound, military officials said.

 

The flying prototype, called the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2), plunged into the ocean after shifting into a mode that allows it to fly Mach 20, or about 13,000 mph, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which oversaw the test flight.

Unless that thing is also meant to be a submarine, the ocean wasn't part of the planned flight path. Perhaps someone should explain to DARPA that they need to programme in the altitude information as well as latitude and longitude.

Or perhaps they ought to make sure their press releases are not ambiguous.

Must have something to do with our recent budget cuts in the US . The GPS programmer had his salary cut and he said to hell with this.

Probably something like windsheer caused it. Judging by the look of it, it can't be that stable in its course, especially at that kind of speed. It would go from 5 miles high to sea level in 2 seconds, literally.
