XenonPirate Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) OK, so I have my science fair idea but I don't know how to test it. I am trying to test whether or not temperature of water changes How much CO2 will dissolve into it, and also whether or not adding substances to the water affects the same thing. However, the most scientific method of testing I can find is heating up some cola and sticking your tongue in it. Does anybody know a way I can find out how much CO2 will dissolve int water, with an actual answer in mg/l or g/l, using NON-SPECIALIST equipment? Thanks XenonPirate P.S. here is my aim ,if anyone can think of a way to actually test this and tell me ASAP it would me much appreciated. Aim I aim to find out whether the temperature of water affects the solubility of carbon dioxide in that water, and also to test if adding certain substances to that water effects the solubility of carbon dioxide in it. Aim I aim to find out whether the temperature of water affects the solubility of carbon dioxide in that water, and also to test if adding certain substances to that water effects the solubility of carbon dioxide in it. Just to clarify, do you want to test whether adding solubles to the water affects the temperature, or whether temperature of the water affects the solubility of substances that are added? (see the difference?) First thing to do when you devise an experiment like that is choose your aim (which you did, just clarify it for me), then try to think about your hypothesis and prediction -- do you THINK the temperature will affect anything? Why yes or why not? Next, we'll try to see how we can devise a good way of testing things -- can you tell me what level you're in? Are we talking about highschool, middle-school, college-level experiment? It will just help us guide you. Can you clarify your aim? In your text intro you wrote something a tad different than the actual aim, so I want to make sure I understand what you want to achieve before we start devising the experiment itself.
Mr. Moonlight Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 okay so you know that CO2 is acidic so possibly a measurment of pH might be in order. So for example if more CO2 dissolves then a higher pH will be observed, assuming no other acidic species are present in the solution. Hope this helps
