Guest Confused Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 I thought it might be a fun idea to build a rechargable battery for a high school chemistry class I wired the batter up its a copper pipe and a zinc nail the battery involves plugging one end of the pipe filling it with vinegar and putting the nail in. I wrapped a wire around the nail and then another wire around the pipe and it electroplated my nail I would have to switch the wires because I would want to have the copper removed from the zinc nail but I am not sure if electroplating is what happens when you recharge a battery if someone knew if electroplating and battery recharging are pretty much the same process I would appreciate it.
YT2095 Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 electroplating is more or less exactly how a rechargable battery works although the cell you`ve made with copper and Zinc isn`t really a rechargable, it`s a single use type like the original pile by Voltaire. if you want a rechargable type with a respectable power output, try 2 lead plates in some dilute sulphuric acid, it`ll charge well, and give a decent output too oh and don`t forget which plate is which with regards to charging it a second time (the 1`st time doesn`t matter). you can sctratch a + and - on each plate so you`ll know which way to charge next time when it goes flat
jsatan Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Just wanted to let you know YT I've got a battery that will (fingers crossed) beat your 5 day led battery. lol. I'll let you know when I've finished.
YT2095 Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Excellent I`ll look forwards to hearing your results, take some pics if you can too, oh yeah, and Good Luck
