there both basicly the same except mercuric has a valency of of 2 and mercurous has a valency of 1, i was just wondering because i was going to make my own from cinnabar but mercury sulphide comes from that, thats why i wanted to know if you could get just mercury not mercury sulphide

mercury(II) sulphide + oxygen -----> mercury + sulphur dioxide

DO IT IN A FUME CUPBOARD!

Heat is needed.

By the way, why lead(II) sulphide react with oxygen to give lead(II) oxide and sulphur dioxide but not pure lead(II)?

Reactivity? and the stronger metallic bonding?
