What do you think are the side effects of excessive masturbation(male) ?

How are they caused? Is it due to stimulation of testosterone?

I would expect there to be some temporary tissue damage/swelling. It would get to the point where the male physically wouldn't be able to continue to the end of the act; either due to pain or because of an absence of semen. Testosterone, to a large extent would be reduced therefore also lessening the desire to masturbate.

But I heard that masturbation becomes a habit, i.e, one tends to masturbate again and again. And you say that it reduces the level of testosterone.

Generally, it means you're not out there trying hard enough to get laid, and you're settling for the lesser pleasure. Alternatively, it could just mean that you're married.

As for testosterone levels, you guys really need to seriously consider verifying the things people tell you before you treat them as true.

Especially in an online forum.

When I was a pubescent youth, many moons ago, we used to say that there were two groups of such people. There were those who admitted to masturbation and those who lied about it. I don't expect the situation has changed over the years. I can't see it doing any more harm than having regular sexual relations with a partner when that time comes (no pun intended)!

Excessive masturbation? (squints real hard to read) I can't see any harm in it (scratches hairy palms), no really, how could it hurt?

This is my first message on this site. I chose this topic because sex is always interesting.

From strictly a clinical angle, the first thing that came to mind is the question, what is excessive masturbation? I would say that if someone masturbated multiple times every day that could be an indication of a problem, but not necessarily what people might think. One common problem for males is a condition called Epididymitis. This is when the spermatic cord, the epididmis, becomes inflamed. This can happen with prolonged sexual stimulation and no release. Masturbation can relieve this condition. I found this out when I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Coast Guard. The only way I can think of that masturbation would be excessive is if there were either a psychological obsession or a hormonal imbalance. I would think that if masturbation did not negatively effect one's life, there is no problem.

Masturbation can be a remarkably healthy practice. For males with a very strong libido and little or no outlet for sex, it can keep the libido under control. Not having this release can have extremely bad effects both physically and mentally. It can even cause a man to commit a sexual offense.

On a personal note; I can masturbate up to a dozen times a week. Though I'm 63 and have rheumatoid and fibromyalgia, they sure don't have any effect on my libido. Being so easily sexually stimulated gets really annoying at times. I often envy men who need Viagra. There's nothing worse than having a high performance car and no track to race it on. I was in a Platonic marriage for over 20 years. After separating, I'm stuck being disabled just enough where I can't get out to meet people. So masturbation has been a great way to keep my libido under control. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

Left-field question. If complete sexual gratification is received from oneself, without the opposite sex... can you lose all motivation to interact sexually with others, if you never identified sex as involving someone else? Can you view sexual release simply as another bodily function as opposed to an act that takes two to tango? Basically, if you don't rely on the opposite sex for gratification, does anything happen psychologically? Do you not equate sexual satisfaction with another person?

Wow, that's quite a mouthful. There is no way I can be convinced that masturbation in itself can cause alienation with having sex with a partner. There are all kinds of mental conditions that cause alienation and intimacy problems. Sexual release isn't just a bodily function, it has profound emotional and mental effects. Sexual repression can cause all kinds of problems. Humans hardly need to rely on the opposite sex and gratification is the lowest common denominator. Sexual intimacy with another in a healthy state is an extremely nurturing exchange. But even masturbation uses fantasy to stimulate, so it isn't entirely without another person.

That's true. What if you are asexual, and have no attraction to anyone. Will your body still need sexual release based on hormones?

Of course not, the hormones are inactive. If the reproductive system is healthy you have a sex drive. I'm not certain what happens if the penis is removed. Most likely the body reacts to that by decreasing testosterone. I worked in urology a long time ago and forgot what happens. We had several patients who had bad infections from penile implant surgery and required a penectomy. I probably blocked that knowledge, it's not exactly a pleasant thought for a male.

What about object sexuality?! Lol. They're physically normal but have an attraction solely to inanimate objects.

If a perfectly healthy child was raised in an environment without the opposite sex, and no knowledge of an opposite sex existing, would they direct their sexuality toward objects? Or people of the same sex? Or just never develop any sexual orientation at all?

You're getting into psycopathology now. I couldn't even begin to understand the attraction to an inanimate object. A lot of people use inanimate objects, but aren't attracted to them. I really like my vibrator, but you won't see taking it out dinner and movie. :) That said, should technology develop robots to accurately imitate a human, then it would certainly result in people even falling in love with a machine. But psychologically, the person would not see the robot as an inanimate object.

I can't say I've ever heard of a child who had no knowledge of the opposite sex. Such a childhood certainly wouldn't be from a healthy environment, that's for sure. What makes you think that a person with no knowledge of the opposite sex would be attracted to an inanimate object?

That was a strange question, what made you think of it?

I was trying to speculate on whether sexual attraction is developed through environment & experience, not just predisposition.... if there was an experiment where a child was brought up in the most healthy environment possible while being unaware of an opposite sex, and sexual attraction is innate... where would it manifest ? just curious...

Research like that is highly unethical and illegal. It's a contradiction to say it would be as healthy as possible, it wouldn't be in any way healthy. There have been many very interesting studies done on emotional deprivation and sex is not a major issue. Emotional deprivation shows that a person seeks to bond with another living thing (preferably it's own species of either gender) to give and receive nurturing. Studies done on feral children have shown to total disinterest in sex. From everything I've seen, sexual transference very rarely occurs with inanimate objects. That is more a fetish, which is something entirely different.,, and a bit weird.

She's definitely interesting. Her thinking is a bit odd, but definitely interesting.

You're too easily shocked, matty. I was being clinical. I even offered some medical facts. Oh, wait, I think I understand. You can't take the penis seriously and you see masturbation as only playing with it. Am I right? Come on, admit it. You just love giving me a hard time don't you? And don't you dare make that a pun.

There is little difference between males and females concerning masturbation?

The drive for sex and procreation are motivated by sex hormones produced by the sex organs of both sexes.

Psychological damage may result for those that masturbate but believe that masturbation is wrong for religious or other convictions, but sex with other individuals is no different concerning psychological damage. As long as "excessive" sex does not cause physical damage or have decease potential, sex in any form is not unhealthful or even has been shown to have health promoting aspects.
