sanjaygeorge Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Well.... I need a help in van de graff. I am trying to make for my science exbit. Will i get 50000V with the motor of a mixer grinder(domestic grinder). 2. I have seen that the sphere of the van de graff is covered with a glass sphere and is grounded. This stuff produces a spark 'SHOW' as sparks fly from sphere to glass. how to do it?????
5614 Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Will i get 50000V with the motor of a mixer grinder(domestic grinder) depends on the motor values - there are different power ones + this is a global site, so 'normal' changes from country to country. I have seen that the sphere of the van de graff is covered with a glass sphere and is grounded. This stuff produces a spark 'SHOW' as sparks fly from sphere to glass. how to do it????? i dont think ive seen this, though if you want to create a spark show you want a tesla coil, thread here: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6037&page=1&pp=20 useful site on tesla coils: http://www.deepfriedneon.com/tesla_frame1.html and the site index: http://www.deepfriedneon.com/tesla_frame0.html
Lance Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 2. I have seen that the sphere of the van de graff is covered with a glass sphere and is grounded. This stuff produces a spark 'SHOW' as sparks fly from sphere to glass. how to do it????? Are you talking about a plasma globe? van de graff normaly have spun aluminum toroids.
5614 Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 in the UK they're known as plasma lamps or plasma balls, glass orb like things, i think this is what he is talking as he said "sphere to glass" and tesla coils are coil --> everywhere! ground. to make a plasma lamp you just need a power source in the middle and a certain gas inside a closed container. plasma lamp A "domestic" version of a tesla coil are the wellknown plasma balls. They generate a high frequent tension of about 600 up to 20,000 Volts at 30 to 50 Kilocycles per second. The discharges happen into a glass ball with a gass like argon or neon at low pressure and generate a plasma which shines in different colours. The power consumption is low with some Watts and there is no danger of burnings and electric chocks if one touch them. tesla coil or etc. are tesla coils!
Lance Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 I want one. Pray for me. Go read the thread on tesla coils and get to work then. Those are some powerful coils though. You can make a plasma globe with a flyback and a light bulb.
YT2095 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 those little portable flourescent lights (battery powered) are quite handy for smaller projects too. tha motor power isn`t that critical in a Van De graff, as long as it turns the belt, it`s fine. the more critical is the belt material and the static coupling to it. Studded Nylon bearing belts are suposed to be the best sort, but probably expensive.
sanjaygeorge Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 Thanks I will check the tesla coils.
YT2095 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 here`s a site that was given to me by someone (it may have been Lance in IRC? I don`t rem), it`s very good though! http://www.deepfriedneon.com/tesla_frame0.html and Don`t forget to check out this page on the site too: http://www.deepfriedneon.com/tesla_frame6.html it`s invaluable for the maths part of things, I hate Maths, but this makes it easy with the online calculators and stuff ) if it was from Lance or someone else, pipe up and let us know. You`ve got a "Thanx" coming
Lance Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 if it was from Lance or someone else, pipe up and let us know. You`ve got a "Thanx" coming I Don't think it was me but I had that site already bookmarked along with hundreds of others. Maybe we should make a list of all the sites on tesla coils.
YT2095 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 the tesla WebRing has them all listed and sorted the crap out from the good sites anyway a link to it might be handy though! like so: http://j.webring.com/hub?ring=teslaring
5614 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 here`s a site that was given to me by someone (it may have been Lance in IRC? You`ve got a "Thanx" coming i think it may have been me, as you can see in post #2 of this thread, ive already pointed him to that site and must again agree, it is an amazing site for everything!
Gilded Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Heh, reminds me when my 8th-9th grade chemistry teacher had two guys to shake hands while touching the Graff-machine.
Lance Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Heh, reminds me when my 8th-9th grade chemistry teacher had two guys to shake hands while touching the Graff-machine. Lol, in 8th-9th grade we would all rub our butts in the plastic chairs then stand up and touch people on the back of their neck/ears. It was hilarious because giant sparks would jump across. One person got suspended because it left a red mark. Those were good times.
YT2095 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 even charged a cap off one and thrown it across a room to a mate shouting "Catch"? )
Bernstein Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Once I threw a spun aluminium toroid across the room at my enemy's head and caused a compound fracture of the left parietal lobe. Now who's dangerous?
YT2095 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 1`stly if you have "Enemies" your not dangerous enough 2`ndly throwing a torroid or ANY blunt instrument is just asking to be found out eventualy! and not too smart
Lance Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Once I threw a spun aluminium toroid across the room at my enemy's head and caused a compound fracture of the left parietal lobe. Now who's dangerous? Hahaha are you serious? I would be worried about denting the toroid, those things cost money.
YT2095 Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 be gratefull the Torroid wasn`t, we`de be talking to you in the Jail computer room otherwise
RICHARDBATTY Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Any idea how much current is drawn by those big coils in lances pics. Thanks lance thats better than a fire works display.
Lance Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Any idea how much current is drawn by those big coils in lances pics. Thanks lance thats better than a fire works display. Are you talking about my tesla coil or the the pictures of the coil 5614 posted? My coil shouldnt draw more than 4 amps but I have not measured it because the fuse on my meter is blown. The pictures 5614 posted im sure draw at least 10 amps but probably much much more.

Sorry lance yes it was 5614 and sorry 5614. 10 A Well thats stuffed my plans for bomfire night. Dam IEE wiring regs. Who in their right mind thought a 13 A outlet would be enough.
