What do you know about Borderline Personality Disorder? I recently learned a friend of mine has it, so I thought it might help to know more about it, like what kinds of problems people with it have and more about how it's treated. Any advice you might have would be appreciated too.

Just like any other "disorder" defined by the DSM, it's just an arbitrary term for an arbitrary set of so-called "symptomps" with no real scientific basis! As such, there's no real disease (or "disorder"), and of course, no "treatment"

That's a rather strong assertion, do you have any supporting evidence of this?

"Advice" in any meaningful sense is difficult to give blindly. Without knowing anything but the fact that your friend was just diagnosed with BPD, any advice given is going to be pretty bland and neutral. With regard to information, though, I generally regard the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies as one of the more reputable sources for decent fact sheets for nonspecialists. If the OP has a higher level of knowledge or interest than what you'd see here or on some Wikipedia page, I can probably scare up something more advanced for you. Let me know. Or, if you have specific questions about the diagnosis, you can go ahead and ask those too.

And ccdan is not really interested in any kind of productive discussion, so he's best dealt with by being ignored. Just go on with the business of the thread and let him shout.

I don't really know a lot about psychology, but I'd be willing to take a look at some more advanced stuff if you think I might be able to understand some of it. If I don't understand something, I can always try looking it up online.

If you don't mind, I'd rather not have this thread turn into that kind of discussion, or at least not right away.

Very interesting! So you admit that you know just about nothing about psychology (and implicitly psichiatry), but for "some reason" you don't want want to " have this thread turn into that kind of discussion"... WHY? Moreover, you're not even curios to find out why I said that there is no science in these fields... as such, you seem interested in this subject, in thes same fashion religious people are interested in religion... well, that's a bit unexpected, beause we are, supposedly on a "science forum"

Is that a factual statement defended by actual evidence, or is it just your way of provoking an argument?

If it's the first, we expect some evidence. If it's the latter, you should go over our rules and refrain from doing it again.

Moderator Note

Also, in case it wasn't clear, we *require* civility in arguments here. That's not a nice request or a sweet hope. It's a requirement. Stop making personal attacks and patronizing statements. I'm quite sure that if you have something to say, you are capable of saying it in a civil manner and argue properly. After all, we are in a science forum.

Not to ignore your question or to brush it aside, but have you read the Wikipedia article on BPD? Most Wikipedia articles are logical, orderly and accurate and contain links to (outside) references that help readers to confirm the accuracy of the articles and for further reading or more in-depth study.

It's because that's not why I made this thread, but I also said "at least not right away". I don't mind if it eventually turns into that kind of discussion. I just wanted you to wait.

It probably would have been a good idea. To be honest, I kind of posted this thread without thinking and doing a little research first. Sorry about that.
