I'm saying that treatment is a separate issue. We are supposed to have equality, but we don't. However, IMO that's not a valid reason for perpetuating the unequal treatment.

 

My problem would be that it is a shame (well a criminal tragedy morelike) that equality seems to come much quicker for the crappy things (like being drafted) and slower for the good things (like equal pay and conditions) - i think this applies to virtually every discrimination within society

I don't disagree. I also think that if this situation were to come to pass, exempting women would be used as a justification (by some) for perpetuating unequal treatment.

It makes far more sense to draft only the most capable people into your army, and put them in the positions where they fit best. And in order to do that, you must first admit that everyone has different capabilities and competencies.

 

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, CaptainPanic. But isn't it this kind of thinking that make women's rights groups upset? Saying that men are stronger and more capable? That women can't do things that men can do? To me, a draft seems like a step forward in true equality. Is it practical? I don't think so. Is it equal? Yes.
