ecko3003 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) Hi All my question is how to differentiate labeling ethers and "oxy' From my notes, an ether is R-O-R one question was draw ethyl vinyl ether which i got correct (CH3CH2OCH=CH2) now i have a question asking for the reverse; give the systematic name of the structure: CH3CH=CHOCH2CH2CH2CH3 and i thought it was propyl ethene ether but the answer is 1 butoxy 1 propene confused to say the least any help would be appreciated Edited October 27, 2011 by ecko3003
Cinimod105 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Just to point out, the structure on the right of the O is not ethene, due to the extra C to the left of it. If the position of the double bond was shifted one carbon to the left, then the compound can be named Allyl Butyl ether. However, due to the placement of the double bond, the C=C-C group cannot be named as a substituent group. Thus, we label the butyl group as -oxy to change it to the substituent group.
