mooeypoo Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Hello i am final year student in the university. and thinking of my project topic, i decided to design an intranet for the school and i want to know which is the best programming language or CMS to use. also are there any optional and/or better project topic to take? I'd take open source CMS system like Drupal or Joomla. They're stable enough to stand on their own, and the project of how to set them up and sort the data and customize the installation will keep you plenty occupied. Save time on programming the system if the system already exists...

GoldenTers Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) In this computer age, when all aspects of the business is run by computer, Intranet management of information has become a vital tool for the proper functioning of companies. But to have an optimal outcome of Intranet software, you must have an efficient design of the Intranet. Although all companies have one design or another, but how effective it is depends on the functionality of the design, not just their appearance. Even hiring the services of the IT department does not guarantee its smooth operation. Taking all these aspects in mind you need to adopt best practices for intranet design for the final outcome of your Intranet software. These best practices are: Keep the design simple and clear: practice, above all, to be taken while designing the intranet is to make it simple and lucid. You should always remember that the surprise factor of intranet design does not help you reach your goal, since its purpose is to provide intranet design information to users in the best way possible. This is the reason why its simple design that will attract more users instead of a complicated design but very good looking. The graphics used in the intranet portal should be simple and should be used in limited ways. You should give more emphasis on the provision of information. You should not clutter the page, but at the same time should not leave much space in that content. Design Consistency: Always be consistent in the design of each page Intranet. We have seen that usually the Intranet pages of the various departments of the company has different design. This should be avoided and must maintain the same appearance and design throughout its Intranet pages. For this you can appoint a group to care for design consistency. Consistency of design also means the consistency of color. Always wear similar color pattern along Intranet pages and color you use should not be too strong to distract the attention of users of content. You should also avoid using the same design for both Internet and Intranet page. Efficient management of contents: You should always mange Intranet content efficiently. For this you can appoint a lead editor and can even train him / her to manage your Intranet. You should always ensure that the form used by employees should always be simple and efficient content management providing sufficient information to its employees. To maintain quality of the content of your Intranet, you must have centralized content editing should always carefully review the pages before publishing. The use of templates, as well as content management system will be very useful and should be used with automated content channels from the outside. If you follow these best practices that could have the best Intranet design that offer the best functionality to users. Edited November 22, 2011 by Cap'n Refsmmat remove spam link
NetSplitter Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) There are several open source options, I would suggest going to www.sourceforge.com and just looking. Be sure the project is active. Since this is a university you are designing this for, I am sure they have a MSDN agreement with Microsoft. Therefore I would suggest trying to get a hold of a SharePoint license. We use SharePoint where I am employed and I have been quite impressed with it. It integrates really well into AD environments.
