Appolinaria Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 to verify you're a human being. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA 1
lightburst Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Because there are spam bots around the internet, well, spamming. And nobody likes an advertisement about a certain little blue pill when people are discussing science!

rktpro Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 You can create thousands of accounts per day with a software. But a captcha would prevent it. Cap'n Refsmmat Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 You can create thousands of accounts per day with a software. But a captcha would prevent it. One would hope. Spam software has gotten clever; there are few methods we can use to prevent spam on SFN, for example. Software is getting good at reading CAPTCHAs, and tricks like question-and-answer verifications only fool them the first time they see it.

Clearly the solution is to post open research problems instead of capchas, even if the spambots work it out we still win. 1
