1123581321 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Hi, i was wondering if its true that the strings in string theory are infintely thin.... and if so, how can it be, that something like a string is still able to carry out particle manisfesations and/or move at all if they are infinaterly thin.... because wouldnt that mean that they have no structure.... how could they be strings at all... also, how can/could the energies of the strings be related to something which is infinetly thin, because wouldnt that mean the energy would be infinite. etc..
Realitycheck Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Strings are supposed to be about the Planck length, which is reeaaaalllly small.
MigL Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 (edited) They are, supposedly, the building blocks of everything. As such they cannot have structure, and are one dimensional open ended or loops. If they had structure they would be 'made of something', which would then be the building block of everything and not the strings. The string is under immense tension and, supposedly, vibrates in 10 spatial dimensions. The energy is then, like any other oscillator, proportional to its frequency and amplitude. O'Nero Samuel Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 conveniently rational, but not satisfying. come to think of it, how can something that is made of nothing make up something? !!!!
michel123456 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I have to admit I never quite understood what a string could be if related to an everyday pattern. To me a string could be a point extended in time: take a point, wait for a Planck time, and you get a string. The question of its thickness is nothing weirder than the zero dimension of a point.
mrs.warren Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 "strings"in the string theory is nothing more than energy compressed into this infinitely thing "string" like manifestation. Instead of looking into the string theory, try researching into the field of the "M" theory. It is backed by mathematical equations, that the sting theory still has left to be defined. Also the "M" theory spans many more multiple dimensions.
