Douglas Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 The Daily Mirror: A large pic of Bush with this caption: “How can 59,054,087 be so dumb!” It ain't easy.
Glider Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Just a pedantic point, but shouldn't your thread title read "A UK paper trashes Bush"?
Sayonara Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Ironically, The Mirror caters for those readers who would probably have voted Bush were they US citizens. Funny old world, isn't it?
atinymonkey Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 I thought the Republicans were some form of Conservatives? Perverted to the service of evil of course.
Sayonara Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Notice how I said "voted Bush", and not "voted Republican". I am not convinced that the Republicans' conservatism is directly analogous to the UK's Conservative Party, in any case.
atinymonkey Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 That's why I said perverted, and not imply they were exactly the same.
Sayonara Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 They almost got around to balancing that. Unless the lower-left pic is tongue-in-cheek...
atinymonkey Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 *sigh* at least it's only a 4 year rule. Pehaps he'll do a Yeltsin and turn back to drink, for comedy purposes.
blike Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Who said the UK media wasn't biased? Or was it just the BBC we were arguing over?
Sayonara Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Of course the UK media is biased - but not in a unified "let's all deride Bush" kind of way. Many of the papers here have their own political leanings, and of course they will pander to the majority opinion of their audience because as we know it's all about sales volume and not random allegiances. The BBC is not beholden to anyone in the way that the rest of the media is, and is not technically a profit-making organisation. They have had a good record for providing impartial journalism for decades. I personally have seen articles on the web site before that swayed one way or the other on political issues, but invariably these represent the opinions of the author rather than any political stance being made by the BBC.
Douglas Posted November 4, 2004 Author Posted November 4, 2004 Who said the UK media wasn't biased? Or was it just the BBC we were arguing over? Maybe the U.K. folks think the media is mainstream......No?
Sayonara Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Seriously, guys - nobody worth listening to reads The Mirror.
blike Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 I think some of the problem here is that when we see papers like that we automatically assert that they are the equivalent of our New York Times, instead of our The Daily Star (supermarket crap no one reads). It's hard for us to put the papers in context as far as national reputation.
Pangloss Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Say what you like about the Brits, but they sure have a sense of humor. CBS News showed a bit of Tony Blair addressing that government body (House of Commons?) with the rectangular room, where the speaker stands at a table in the center of the room. He was reading off a piece of paper, and said something like "we congradulate president.... Karzai of Afghanistan", and the room erupted into laughter.
bloodhound Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 oh yeah. that was before the election was decided. and he left enough pause in between president ... and Karzai to hint something. blair is funny.
Douglas Posted November 4, 2004 Author Posted November 4, 2004 Seriously, guys - nobody worth listening to reads The Mirror. Sayo, I agree, I was reading BBC website, they were reporting responsibly.
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 I thought Bush spent $250M and Kerry spent $330M? [/nitpick]
