What is the most effective way to gain more knowledge of anything?

Just do it. Nothing beats just trying to crack on with it.

Then I would say talk to as many people as possible about it.

I've always preferred Miller's Chunking Principle, where you take a "chunk" of information, learn it thoroughly and apply it before moving on to the next "chunk". It's especially effective with computers since most information is imparted by people with an urge to force enormous amounts of information down your throat.

Borrow 82 pounds worth of books on the comp language you want to learn (or anything really) from the library, then squat in front of the computer.

Now that you have the right environment and setting, read each and every thing in that book, and try each out before moving on. That's how I learned computer science, at least.

Three simple steps: practice, practice, practice. (It works with most other endeavours too. :))

Computer Sciences are computational sciences .. they are either computable on either papers or computer .. and on either, you need to practice

As Phi for All mentioned: The Miller's Chunking Principle is a good way to do study,
