So...can anything be done with sodium nitrite? And I dont mean drugs 'n stuff. I mean can it be used to make fun explosions and such. Also, could it substitute for NaNO3 when making KNO3? If so, would the resulting KNO2 be similar to KNO3. Thanks

not really, and it`s useless as a pyro oxidiser, although it`s a great Ion donor for a bright Yellow color.

the only other use is as an intermediary in a H.E synth that I`ll not share.

Incompatibilities:

Reacts with acids to emit toxic fumes of nitrogen dioxide. Contact with the following may cause an explosion: barium rhodanide, boron phosphide, cyanides, sodium thiosulfate, sodium hypophosphite, sulfur plus charcoal, powdered aluminum and aluminum oxide. Fibrous organic material such as jute, wood, and similar cellulosic materials can become highly combustible by nitrate impregnation.

Conditions to Avoid:

Heat, flame, ignition sources, shock, friction, incompatibles.

So maybe you could blow it up or something!

Sodium nitrite is also used as a preservative when making sausages

it is used as a preservative with many foods especially A LOT of meats. (not only sausages)

These must be some pretty exciting sausages. :D

Nitrites suck. Inside your body, they can turn into nitros... nitra... whatevers, that are very potential carcinogens. :<

ok... mix it in proportion to this mixture:

75 NaNO3

15 C (charcoal) (Measured in moles i believe)

10 S (sulfur)

make sure all of the components are pretty damn well powdered... and do not grind dis while its mixed... because it will likely explode...

this is sort of mealpowder... u can refine it further to make a counterpart of black powder i think ;)

did you READ the OP?

all of the above is for nitrATE not nitrITE!

all in all a useless post in this thread :(

Thanks for the info everyone...tho i guess NaNO2 is pretty much useless for pyrotechnics... Thanks anyways, and does anyone know of a chem supply store that sells to minors in the US?

I yet to find one that sells to people of legal age unless they have permits, or a school etc unless your buying things that have no msds.

the only H.E that uses sodium nitrITE is Diazodinitrophenol (DDNP or DINOL).

I`m not aware of any others, and you`de never get your hands on the rest of the ingredients to make it anyway :)

Such as? I find DDNP to be a moderate difficulty synth. Or perhaps we shouldn't go there. :P

such as, it`s easy to make if you know what you`re doing and have the chems.

Chems that most folk don`t have or can`t buy without liscence :)

my post was for info only.

It's sad how some high explosives can be synthed even without those. :/
