albertlee Posted November 12, 2004 Posted November 12, 2004 Why does'nt Apple design a version of OS X that runs under X86 architecture??

swansont Posted November 13, 2004 Posted November 13, 2004 Why does'nt Apple design a version of OS X that runs under X86 architecture?? Because somebody already builds such a system, and they don't want to go into that business and try to compete.
albertlee Posted November 13, 2004 Author Posted November 13, 2004 But wouldn't building on X86 architecture be better to sell Apples?? there are many hardwares that are compatable with X86... Albert

Albert Apple is mainly a hardware company, not a software company. They don't want you buying hardware from someone else. When they sell their OS separately, it is to people who already own a Mac. The downside is that you can't buy really cheap hardware. The upside is that you don't have as many problems from having cheap hardware (especially from multiple sources that end up being somehow incompatible).
