lucifer Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 hi, whatz the structure of atom....can we see it through electron microscope?
Harish Kumar.A Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Well atoms contains a dense nucleus which contain protons and neutrons.Protons have positive charge while neutrons have negative charge. then there are electrons that revolve around the nucleus. The charge of atom is stable because of the balancing act of protons and electrons. all the properties of a particular substance depend upon the atomic number and electrons. electrons orbit in energy levels.

A couple of corrections/clarifications. Neutrons are uncharged, they are neutral. The electrons are negatively charged and exist in a probability cloud around the nucleus. To observe effects due to the atomic structure there have been many experiments conducted. A good place to start researching this is Rutherford's gold scattering experiment.
juanrga Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) hi, whatz the structure of atom....can we see it through electron microscope? With advanced electron microscopes you could 'see' a big molecule, but not the structure of an atom because have not enough resolution. Edited June 2, 2012 by juanrga

An atom is not like a "mini solar system" that you have described above. If electrons followed a specific path and revolved around the nucleus, they ought to radiate energy, which would cause them to collapse (possitive and negative forces attract each other). You are combining "classical" physics with quantum physics...
Enthalpy Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Present-day electron microscopes show individual atoms, even 2-3 atomic layers below the surface. Fabulous. Recently they showed the displacement of an atom as a ferroelectric ceramic like BaTiO3 is polarized. They don't show the composition of the atoms.
