TWJian Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 I'm doing a study on ants and the pheromones and i need help on the structure of it.(ie:alkenes, proteins, hormones and such) Can anybody help me?I have to get attention this way since nobody is answering by post.

Auk Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Here, try this link. It looks interesting. Personally I do not know very much about the subject so I can only give you a link. http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/P/Pheromones.html
Martin Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 hey Jian, I found some molecular structure of pheromone information 4-methyl-3-heptanol http://www.public.asu.edu/~iangould/reallife/pheromone/pheromone.html but it has to be (4S)-methyl-(3R)-heptanol they did an experiment showing that only one stereo-isomer was active only one structural version of the molecule would work with those particular type of ants
Skye Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 http://www.pherobase.com/database/compounds-index.html Edit: That's a list of pheromones from a variety of animals. I think the phyla for ants is Formicidae, this is its page: http://www.pherobase.com/database/family-Formicidae.html
TWJian Posted December 5, 2004 Author Posted December 5, 2004 Thanks guys, expecially you Martin. You seem to be quite interested in my science project.By the way,how do insects detect pheromones?with the VNO?
TWJian Posted December 5, 2004 Author Posted December 5, 2004 sigh.Headaches to syntesize those pheromones.Blown 2 testubes(I had to cork them up to prevent the chemicals from evaporating) .Any ideas anyone to extract the pheromones from the ants?Currently I'm working on the weaver ant.
Auk Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 How's the project going, do you need any more help?
TWJian Posted December 16, 2004 Author Posted December 16, 2004 I try to branch off a hydrocarbon chain with ceramics(like cracking) or introduce alkanes into the base chain.Sigh, these compunds are ridicolously complex. This time, i try to heat them indirectly.(takes so long since i can't let them boil or 'boom!')Btw,anyone got any tips on syntesizing Undecane?I also need information on the pheromones secreted by Oecophylla smaragdina(a type of weaver ant, can't find it in the pherobase)
TWJian Posted December 20, 2004 Author Posted December 20, 2004 sigh, nevermind about the undecane.Apparently I forgot about the name of the 11 carbon chain of alkanes.
