ecoli Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 It's unfortunate that blacks are underrepresented in STEM fields, in general. This likely has more to do with long term socio-economic conditions than overt racism, however. For example, its not like the Nobel committee is biased towards Jews, its just that there skewed representation due to many factors, education in particular. And I say "unfortunate", because STEM fields especially benefit from diverse, multi-cultural perspectives.
Appolinaria Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 And I say "unfortunate", because STEM fields especially benefit from diverse, multi-cultural perspectives. That's an interesting statement for a number of reasons.
iNow Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Is it sexist that no women have won it either? Interestingly, it was only 2 years ago that the first person from a developing country ever won. The thing is only awarded every four years. It's a lot like the President of the US... We only now have our very first black president, and still no woman has ever held the office.
ajb Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 just saying...... racial bias I doubt it is racism on the part of the committee, rather there does not seem to be many black mathematicians of that standard to be nominated.
