However, quantum mechanically electric fields can be looked upon as virtual photons (from QED). But to me its quite unclear about the math and ideas in QED. According to "standard" cosmology, a photon has no mass, so would be unaffected by gravity. Since all light is EM radiation and is caused by electric and magnetic fields, no other conclussion is possible. This, in turn, determines the electric permittivity of the material and thus influences many other phenomena in that medium, from the capacitance of capacitors to the speed of light.
