Hey guys!

Here's a video of a great new concept that the Weizman Centre in Israel thought of- instead of lecturing to in the uni, where its the same place and same type of people who go there, they started lecturing in bars in major cities so anybody could come, listen and learn.

If you guys are into science, especially science education- watch the video and maybe do something like this yourself.

Dutch universities have organized public lectures for several decades now.

 

Studium Generale (Department for General Studies) organizes lectures, debates, symposia, film screenings and other activities for a broad audience of students, university staff and anybody with an interest in science and scholarship. [...] (source: website university of Leiden, Netherlands)

 

As far as I know, all Dutch universities organize these.

 

The lectures and workshops tend to be public: open to everyone, even though the majority of attendants are students. And in a few occasions they are held in pubs. But usually there are simply too many people to fit in a small pub, and they need to go to larger venues.

That is cool, however the government will not allow it for these primary reasons:

- school is for education, yes, and also for political purposes

 

- bars are informal - little tracking of attendence, noisy surrounding, etc.

 

- financial problems generate from sudden change of style
