Vectorspace Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Hello and thanks in advance. 1) Below is a list of common weak acids that can be used to prepare buffers. Listed with each is the pKa for the first proton removed. Weak Acid pKa Conjugate Base H2C2O4 1.19 HC3H5O3 3.86 HC2H3O2 4.74 NH4+ 9.74 For each weak acid, list the chemical formula for the conjugate base in the column above. 2) You want to construct a buffer of pH 4.0. Which compounds from the previous table will you use to create your buffer? 3) Will the concentrations of weak acid and conjugate base be equal in your buffer? If not, which component will have a higher concentration? 4) Explain why you must use the Henderson-Hasselbach equation to solve for the pH of a solution containing a weak acid, but you don’t have to use that equation to solve for the pH of a solution containing a strong acid.
John Cuthber Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Well, how far have you got? (after all, this forum won't just give you an answer, it will provide help and guidance)
