MolecularMan14 Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 whoa! I suddenly only have 599 posts, or so it appears! What happened to the 779 or something i had about an hour ago?!? Has anyone else had this problem?! Im not mad, just really suprised! What happened?
YT2095 Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Don`t Panic! Site maintenance scripts on the db which includes a rebuild of post counts has been run as a mattr of course. It usually drops everyone's count a bit because it ignores soft-deleted posts. This time of course it also ignored GD and the removed thread area, hence the big knock-down. it`s nothing to worry about, and all will be fixed in due time, mean time, feel free to enjoy the free bar and snacks available
MolecularMan14 Posted December 19, 2004 Author Posted December 19, 2004 lol, panic, me never In any case, just wasnt sure what was going on. thanks! Free bar! WHERE?!
YT2095 Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 can ya see the place over in the corner where all the babes are at? I`m in the middle, THAT`s the bar *HIC*
MolecularMan14 Posted December 20, 2004 Author Posted December 20, 2004 lol, save some for the rest of us man. by that, i mean both babes, and booze
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Holy cow! I'm down from 2970 to 2000!
blike Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 We recalculated the post counts from scratch excluding removed and deleted posts. Posts made in general discussion were not counted either. No posts have disappeared. They're in general discussion, which doesn't count towards post counts.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 That's one heck of a lot of posts that I made in GD.
Sayonara Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 ...let's not forget your posts that were soft-deleted or moved to the hidden forum Those weren't counted either.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 What is soft-deletion? I thought they were just plain deleted.
Sayonara Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 It removes the post from general view, but mods can see an audit trail including the reason for deletion.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Oh I see. But I wouldn't like to think that I had that many posts deleted. Is this script run often?
Sayonara Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Not really, no. It had a big impact this time because post count incrementation has been turned off for GD and removed threads.
Gilded Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 So that's what it was. bud noticed it first, probably, and I was quite surprised too. "can ya see the place over in the corner where all the babes are at? I`m in the middle, THAT`s the bar :)" Now now YT, drinking in moderation is OK but when you start seeing your wife as multiple persons, it's time to call the cab.
5614 Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 outta interest what is the advantage to the mods/admins of running this "post killing script" ! ???
Sayonara Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 There is no "post killing script". Over time the records in the database are corrupted by a variety of factors. The postcount synchronisation script is just one of several tasks that the maintenace function carries out.
5614 Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 ok so i worded it badly! but what does SFN and you admins gain outta running the post count sync script.... even if it does maintain the post number. i mean i dont mind and im not saying dont just as a person interested in computers i wonder from an admins view what is the advantage of running a sync process such as this? i mean, its not like that larger numbers take up more space on the server or something!
YT2095 Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 "can ya see the place over in the corner where all the babes are at? I`m in the middle' date=' THAT`s the bar :)" Now now YT, drinking in moderation is OK but when you start seeing your wife as multiple persons, it's time to call the cab. [/quote'] I DO!!!!! and she still won`t let me drink alone (( *Hic*
Sayonara Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 but what does SFN and you admins gain outta running the post count sync script.... even if it does maintain the post number. A database without problems, and a more realistic idea of member participation in scientific discussions for guests and new members. i mean, its not like that larger numbers take up more space on the server or something! Actually they do, but that's not really relevant.
Gilded Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 "A database without problems, and a more realistic idea of member participation in scientific discussions for guests and new members." For some people that doesn't seem to be worth getting their post count lowered.
JaKiri Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Post counts are granted by the administration, and the administration can take them away at will. Freedoms likewise.
Sayonara Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 For some people that doesn't seem to be worth getting their post count lowered. I honestly couldn't give two hoots, and I seriously doubt Blike does either.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Isn't it odd that a thread about people's post counts going down turns into a thread where people regain them? This thread has no point.
blike Posted December 24, 2004 Posted December 24, 2004 For some people that doesn't seem to be worth getting their post count lowered. Well, post count really isn't an indicator of anything. Their posts are still on the forum.
