mlevandoski1 Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 (edited) I am a regular on one other forum (and please excuse my spelling i have a memory disorder) but anyways i have a question or two i would like to pose. one, if there is ever going to be an evacuation of any substantial number of people from our planet outward, and i am in no way bringing the question "if it will happen" this is a functional question, regardless of the fact that "they" will need time to develope proper propulsion one would think any craft substantial enough to house and transport the numbers we would require to realisticly populate any place would be massive beyond realistic and wouldnt you think we should at least start building the craft without the engine i mean it will take i am sure in excess of 30 maybe 50 years just to get the materials into orbit. if there is a more proper place to post this question please ffeel free to move it or infract me or have a mod stomp on my little ego if this is an improper question violating the ua here.... well this lounge moves a little slow..... Answer meeeeee HELLO??? Edited January 1, 2013 by mlevandoski1
iNow Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 What was your question, exactly? Do I think we are building a craft? Do I think we should build such a craft? Do I think we can build such a craft? Not sure what the question was, but I'm also not at 100% right now, so my apologies if I've missed it. I think we both can, should, and will eventually build such a craft, btw... So long as we don't kill ourselves first.

Technology moves ahead, so if you start building too early, the technology you use will be obsolete by the time you use it. Wasted effort. well this lounge moves a little slow..... Answer meeeeee HELLO??? Well, you posted on New year's Eve…
mlevandoski1 Posted January 1, 2013 Author Posted January 1, 2013 Yeah i just think with the length of time we know it will take to build anything substantial and the shortness of any notice we might get that we need a craft that maybe now would be a good time to at least get started on a giant raft out there with no engine i mean just like any other project the best place to learn will most likely be out there during the bulding process before its an emergency.... also it would make a hell of an economic stimulus on a global level everyone would be working again and it would be a massive industrial undertaking it would fix a lot of issues we have and help prepare for an "event" Technology moves ahead, so if you start building too early, the technology you use will be obsolete by the time you use it. Wasted effort. Well, you posted on New year's Eve… best place to learn .. out there and hey the fish people forum i go to was actualy pretty busy ... maybe us fish people are just nerdier lol happy new year
cladking Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I doubt the earth will ever be evacuated. I can see man moving out to the stars but human life on earth will probably fail long before the sun becomes a red giant. Who knows?
Phi for All Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 It's doubtful we'd try to build massive ships here on Earth whether we're evacuating or just exploring. The bigger the payload the more fuel required to break atmosphere, and at a certain point you'd exceed the ability of our present materials to handle the stress. I think when spacecraft go beyond the realm of government-financed missions, it will be because some future Henry Ford-type develops an inexpensive, mass-produced vehicle that carries a decent blend of people and materiel. Sort of a Model-Star-T (and before swansont beats me to it, yes, there will probably be a few Model-Star-T wrecks). I also think we'll end up building these craft off-planet. That's what we should be working towards, imo, a moon or space based facility that acts as a base for mining missions to find ore so we can build more spacecraft and other facilities that don't require resources from Earth.
