ecoli Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 I'm trying to get rid of Internet explorer, but when I try to delete the "Internet Explorer" folder, from program files, it won't let me. It says the source file is in use, but I don't have IE running. What should I do? Thank you
Silencer Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 It's not possible. In fact, I think if you succeeded the entire universe would undo itself. Same goes for Windows Media Player.
ecoli Posted January 7, 2005 Author Posted January 7, 2005 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;192852 I found this web site that says otherwise...
bloodhound Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 you CAN actually get a third party software specially made to get rid of IE from ur computer. I wouldnt recommend you to do that, as u will need IE for many of the sites out there, the most important being windows update. you can however remove all the shorcuts to it and make it invisible by going to control panel -> windows components and deselecting the IE option
5614 Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 the top link is for IE 4.5 most users are on IE6 now. by simply setting another browser as your default browser you will rarely see IE.
Jordan14 Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 If you want to use a new browser I just suggest that you forget about IE and just leave it where it is. It will be to much of a hassle to get rid of. And I suggest Firefox
ecoli Posted January 7, 2005 Author Posted January 7, 2005 I'm using Firefo...But I keep getting pop-up ads from the IE browser...even after I disabled it.
bloodhound Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 that definitely means u got some sort of adware. try download adaware and spybot. and scanning ur computer.
bloodhound Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 adaware and spybot are programs built to scan your computer for adware and spyware. they do a great job as well. IE lets so much stuff into ur computer without u knowing. adware http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=pop spybot http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=pop those two are infact the top two most downloaded files in download.com
bloodhound Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 yes. i would recommend. as each of them could find stuff that another cannot. usually for general adware, those two should be enough. but for more virulent strains. u will need other tools.
Silencer Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 I've found that Adaware (better than Spybot IMO) and a free antivirus such as AVG are all you need to stay clean.
Sayonara Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 I recommend using both AdAware and Spybot together, as their definition lists don't overlap fully. BTW, there is now a fix available for the DSO Exploit failure in SpyBot.
bloodhound Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 do i have to download a patch? reinstall spybot again. or does it come on in the updates? all i see is just definition updates.
Sayonara Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4392.html Huzzah!
bloodhound Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 was this patch approved by the original author of spybot?
5614 Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 was this patch approved by the original author of spybot? yes, both the patch and the program were made by Safer Networking Limited
bloodhound Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 Safer Networking limited? from what i see its from PepiMK software. Also they dont have that patch, or any reference to it in the main spybot website. i have installed it anyway. just hope that its not somethingy dodgy.
5614 Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 open spybot s & d go to help > about at the bottom it says "copyright..... safer Ntworking limited" or go help > help the 'welcome' section, near the top it says it again there
5614 Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 oh, and here's there site: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html website url =~ safe networking limited pepi MK is the programmer or someone important! Patrick M. Kolla is his whole name
bloodhound Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 ok. but i am sure if the author approved they would have put the patch up for download there as well. oh yeah. how did u know the patch was from safer networking
5614 Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 in the: properties > version > other version info > company it tells ya.
