Apparently there have been previous instances of this. So I'm curious -- in those prior escapes, what was the conclusion as to how the strains got out?

Oh, and Monsanto's public image will only worsen now. Go figure.

Apparently there have been previous instances of this.

Instances of escape, yes - this one is of an unapproved and never marketed varietal last legitimately planted by anyone in 2005, which is a peculiarity.

The means of dispersal is not agreed in any specific case not involving direct and unchallenged establishment of theft. There are many possibilities, and great difficulty in screening any of them out: Insect or other organism pollen transfer and unwitting reproduction by farmers, mechanical transfer by disease organisms or pests of various kinds, volunteer seed dispersal of various kinds (wind, animals, birds, insects, runoff water, etc), clandestine continuance by Monsanto or others, theft by calculating farmers, and of course the growing black market in this valuable and easily obtained commodity - the list is longer, but the takehome is the same: the reassurances of the experts were empty, exactly as recognized by observors.of the industry back when the test plantings were being allowed without adequate regulation or oversight.

Yes. When you see a lot of people trying to prevent something escaping, then you know it will escape sooner or later. Reassurances of experts? Common sense usually trumps this. .
