"*.dat" video file to "*.mpg"

i have a video file "*.dat" i want to capture some clips out of it but "Movie maker" doesn't recognise this format.

 

how can i change the file to ".mpg" or any other known formats? or is there any program which recognises the ".dat" video format?

i wonder what ur doing with a .dat in the first place. probably an incomplete download via Kazaa, or the dat file from VCD. i guess ur could try adobe premier, or download nero with its encoding pack.
