Cousin's Child Has Birth Defects

My cousin had a child today. The same two fingers are fused together on both hands and the corresponding toes of both feet. He also has a very high fever and is not considered in stable condition.

 

I don't have any more info since they live far away and my uncle was frantic when we talked to him. Last I heard they were running some tests on the chromosomes.

 

Is this a known disorder or some kind of strange mutation? Do you have any idea what it could mean for the child's health in the future, or other problems that may exist that we don't know about yet?

actually, i had the same problem. i heard my mom had a fever while she was pregnant and the doctor gave way too strong medicine. so two fingers on my left hand and three on the right were fused ( only the skin, so easily treated with surgery)

Babies in far worse conditions have lived...it doesn't sound too unusual to me.

Isn't it strange that the fused digits all correspond? If it was just like two fingers then I wouldn't be too worried, but this seems more indicative of a deeper genetic problem.

 

Meh, maybe I am just worrying.

Coincidince? Is there family history of that? or it could be a mutation...Even so surgery should easily fix it.

My sister has her internal organs reversed: heart on right side, etc. Many of us are born with abnormalities that may not be obvious. I hope all works out for your cousin's child. The odds are that they will..

One of my other cousins (not a sibling to the one who had a child) had two fused toes.

 

There are lots of other problems in my family, but none similar to this.

 

Also, they didn't give her any medicine while pregnant.
