joeyf327 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Hey everyone, I am planning on opening a non profit space agency. This agency would be full of civilians from all aspects of science, and other fields. We would have a number of different departments, and a lot of projects. Funding would come from donations, sponsors, inventions we come out with, books, and other idea's. If we find something that the world should know and we confirm it and confirm it again and again we will release the information to the public. This agencies headquarters and first location will be where I live in Boston MA. One project and the major project will be to create a human civilization on the moon. Awesome Idea, a lot of money I know, but I can dream. Now my question. Do you think this could be a successful non profit organization? If not, why? Thank you!
Phi for All Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Right now, a lot of non-profit effort is aimed at global space policy governance. Not as sexy as a moon colony, but even getting the world to agree who's responsible for orbital debris is a huge headache. Everyone wants to be in space, no one wants to take responsibility and they all want special treatment. You might want to consider moving down to DC. Anything to do with space is going to be heavily influenced by government, and the policymakers all work in DC. Brussels or Paris are good hubs for the ESA. I've been thinking lately that the moon might make a good base for space mining operations. I don't know if that would qualify as your "human civilization". I read where some private firms are working on a drone vessel that would seek out an asteroid, attach itself to it and pilot the asteroid slowly to the desired area. Silly to bring them down to Earth when we could park them near a moon base to more easily get to the materials.
joeyf327 Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 I've been thinking of a lot of new inventions related to space travel and my only problem is the funding and not knowing how to make it. But if I start the non profit I can try and get the funding for it and get to work with people who know how to make this stuff.
ajb Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Now my question. Do you think this could be a successful non profit organization? If not, why? Thank you! Yes, but you would need more achievable short and medium term aims. Space education and the popularisation of space science should also be very important to the organisation.
joeyf327 Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
ajb Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! Not really, you will have to form a group of scientists to act as a steering committee.
