This is homework help. Have you been asked to explain as a homework question? We do not do your homework for you, but since you seem to be having trouble with basic understanding; There are two physical principles involved. The law of conservation of mass. The law of conservation of energy. (In this case mechanical energy) What do you know about these? You can answer the question, without maths, using these two physical principles.
