petrushka.googol Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 In one of my earlier posts i had asked why is it that photons are affected by gravity inspite of having zero rest mass and was informed that this happens because of general relativity. if force particles are affected by mass then do stars warp the energy fields of force carrying particles. This could have implications on the direction and intensity of force carrying particles in systems like binary star systems. Please provide some insight.

I am not sure what you reallu mean by energy fields, but yes all fields are influenced by gravity. For example you have to take into account the geometry when dealing with electromagnetic fields for example. That said, in practice as gravity is so weak we can usually ignore it when dealing with particle physics.
BearOfNH Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 A photon traveling near a star will undergo a change of direction a la gravitational lensing. This does not happen because the star "pulls on" the photon, but rather because the star's gravity warps space itself. The photon thinks it's going in a straight line, and indeed it is, but a distant observer can see it appears to be curving in towards the star. This is why the orbit of Mercury was impossible to get right with the Newtonian equations alone. Einstein discovered his GR equations nailed the orbit precisely.
