Food additives are to improve the quality of food color, aroma, and taste and so on, and put into food for the needs of the preservation and processing of the compounds or natural substances.

Definition of food additives is not the same in countries around the world, the United Nations food and agriculture organization (FAO) and the world

health organization (WHO) joint committee on food additives food regulations are defined as food additive is consciously general with a small

amount added to the food, to improve the appearance and flavor of food and organizational structure or the nature of the storage of nutrients.

In the EU, the food additives have an "E-number". Although you should always doublecheck wikipedia if this is for work/school, this list in the link gives a nice impression of all the regulated food additives.

In the EU, the complete list of ingredients is always printed on the label (it is mandatory), including all the E-numbers that were used. Here are two examples of labeling in the EU:

[edit] For those interested, the official E-numbers can also be found online (.pdf warning) but they are giant pdf files.
