Mike Smith Cosmos Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 (edited) This thus invokes OBSERVATION , consciousness , intuition , life , . Us as conscious life . Could this be what Prof Roger Penrose is speaking of " as a third area of Science. Could this be touching shoreline on a new island of scientific understanding ? Mike[/quote. ]. OUR OBSERVATION . Our conscious , intuitive , inspirational , obervation of nature . Other frames of reference can be natures gravitational force, another natures magnetic force, another it's electrical force , another it's atomic strong force , another it's weak force , etc etc Could it not be, that ONE of the frames of reference , caused by breaking symmetry , . ---- IS OUR OBSERVATION ... ---- .. - Our conscious , intuitive , observation of nature . . --- As we speak Prof Brian cox is speaking( in his TV series ' in search of science ' ) of ' John Tyndales ' statement that Blue Sky Research is different from Engineering research with its immediate application . He considers Blue sky ideas as separate and yet leading to Boyles list of practical applications Blue sky research is the pond from which future research may draw on for future practical application, but separate from the immediate practical application! Being set up behind St Pancras station London. It will be multi disciplined . Research , creative , ... Serendipitous discoveries that will change the World ... Wow ! Strange Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Prof cox mentioned Fransis Crick Institute under the oversight by Paul Nurse . If people want to know more about this: http://www.crick.ac.uk/ Research , creative , ... Serendipitous discoveries that will change the World ... Cutting edge , controversial research ...... Free thinkers ... So, pretty much the same any other research institute, then. It will be multi disciplined . But that should be really valuable. Multidisciplinary research already happens, of course, but more is a good thing. Not constrain the scientists I'm sure they will be just as "constrained" by the scientific method as any other scientists. (Which is, of course, a Good Thing.) 1
Essay Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Could this be touching shoreline on a new island of scientific understanding ? Mike Yes, and I think you’ll enjoy this too. I just caught E. O. Wilson’s interview with Charlie Rose. ...if you can handle the preliminary promotional propaganda.... He is after all, it seems, the Father of Evolutionary Biology as well as Sociobiology ...not just the “the world’s foremost expert on ants!” Wilson discusses a ‘next step’ sort of view, uniting "the Two Cultures," the Sciences and the Humanities; in a way similar to C. P. Snow’s old dream of bridging the chasm between the Sciences & Humanities. === E. O. Wilson also mentions the core of what we need to step forward into “the New Enlightenment,” roughly: 1. Evolutionary Biology (and of course, genetics, epigenetics, genomics, etc.) 2. Brain Science (in particular, and Neuroscience in general) 3. Archaeology (and including “Human Paleontology”) 4. Artificial Intelligence (and Robotics) …he understands the importance of the microbial sphere. …and opines on tribalism, religion, history, and “the Meaning of Human Existence,” the title of his newest book! “Searching for meaning in what Nietzsche once called "the rainbow colors" around the outer edges of knowledge and imagination, Wilson takes his readers on a journey—from our earliest inception to a provocative look at what the future of mankind portends.” –National Book Foundation The last 5 minutes of this 25 minute video are well worthwhile. ~
Mike Smith Cosmos Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 (edited) Yes, and I think youll enjoy this too......... The last 5 minutes of this 25 minute video are well worthwhile. ~ I have tried to find this Clip, but there appears to be some difficulty with this side of the Atlantic Ocean ( I appreciate this does not bode well for my sea born Navigating Skills ) But there you go ! Mike Smith Cosmos Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 (edited) . Stretch ... More and more thinkers are trying hard to make ' that leap of ideas ' to reach a clearer picture of the universe. Hence all this interest in " a theory of everything. Even Stephen Hawkins stars in a film just released in the UK. called:- .. theory of everything. .. Others talk of ' clarifying the picture of nature ' We just need to stretch that little bit further .. Mike Edited January 3, 2015 by Mike Smith Cosmos
Mike Smith Cosmos Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) I think one of the paradigm changes required to make this stretch to a possible new physics , is to explore the areas up in the clouds figuratively. A Top down approach , as another way of exploring new physics solutions. As illustrated by the hand reaching up to the cloud. Rather than looking for principles built up from fields, waves particles ALL built one on top of another from some fundamental quantum region at the very small. Maybe a new island of endeavour could come from the larger classical world stretching back from the Top Down , looking more for the possibility to happen , coming up from the quantum small . An evidence for this is the " natural selection process " within the environment of living things. There are other examples where the pressure of things coming up from the quantum level , meet the restrictions of the larger classical environment , with the result of a ' product ' , unlikely without the restrictions of the larger classical environment . Mike Smith Cosmos Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) I think Richard Fortey, has shown this to be true in his recent series on the current changes happening on islands such as Madegasca. Madeira , Hawaii etc Here the top down approach is the driver , rather than the bottom up .
