Since I mainly work in the field of mathematics and computer science, I wanted someone else's recommendations. The trouble is that beyond popular science accounts most of the literature on black holes is aimed at at least graduate students. With that in mind, assuming your friend knows very little about GR I suggest the lecture notes by Carroll.
