calbiterol Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 I've searched the forums. I've searched online. I've searched high and low. I understand the principle behind them (for the most part - but any in-depth explanations would be cool.) But I can't find what I want. So, HOW can I make a refrigerator from parts readily available (like, go to hardware store, etc) that is reasonably safe and (probly) legal? P.S.: I did find one design, but it didn't really show me what I wanted.
5614 Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 http://home.howstuffworks.com/refrigerator2.htm might be useful, and go to the next few pages.
Edward Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Why dont you look at homebuilt computer cooling sytems you may find something useful.

calbiterol Posted February 21, 2005 Author Posted February 21, 2005 While I'm at it, can a stirling cycle engine (in reverse, or something like that) be used to refrigerate?
YT2095 Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 if you had an air compressor, you could make a vortex freezer?
Newtonian Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 You cannot beat a sink full of cold water in the short term(from student days living in digs). Works great for milk, not so well for sandwiches, though i may have wrapped them up wrong!
YT2095 Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 LOL, I rem doing similar to that with Beer, we had an old record player, so we arranged the beers on the turntable put a wet cloth over it and pressed Play we`de take it in turns to "water the Beer" Aaaah the Good Ol` days
calbiterol Posted February 21, 2005 Author Posted February 21, 2005 A vortex refrigerator? What is that?
YT2095 Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 A vortex refrigerator? What is that? take a look here: http://www.newmantools.com/vor780.htm http://www.itwvortec.com/vortex_coolers.php and so on... they can also be used to Heat things (the "waste product").
calbiterol Posted February 22, 2005 Author Posted February 22, 2005 How many of these could be used (hypothetically ) to refrigerate to liquid-nitrogen temperatures?
drz Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 easy man, go buy an entire ac unit from an old car in the junk yard Get a air tight box. Setup the Auto AC to blow cold air in the box Use an electric motor and a pulley and a belt to drive the ac pump. You could use a lawn mower engine, but, wouldn't be a very cost effective. I have no idea how cold you could get with this, maybe you could use multiple systems, or, if the area is small enough it might get pretty cold.
