Cap'n Refsmmat Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 I'm doing a project and I need some good video editing software. Any reccomendations? It should be free, or have a trial that I can use before I have to pay.
Hactar Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 My friend uses Adobe Premier, he likes that a lot. I've heard its pretty good.
Dave Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 You might want to try Avid FreeDV (http://www.avid.com), I've heard it's pretty good for just bolting video together. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but (imo) it's the best of any video editor out there.
Newtonian Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 Depends what you want it for, joining mpegs, avi, divx.Converting formats, vcd's,dvd's you have to be more specific. You might only need a small program? what do you want t to do Cap'n
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted February 25, 2005 Author Posted February 25, 2005 I'm taping a video and I need to put the bits together and add subtitles, etc. Nothing too fancy. erm, Avid FreeDv says that it needs a gigabyte of system memory... yikes. I have half that.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted February 25, 2005 Author Posted February 25, 2005 FireWire or USB, either way, I believe.

I have half that.[/quote'] I use Sony's Pixella. It's not that great, unless your doing small stuff. I got it for free with my camera, so I'm not sure you can get it online. edit: heres the website http://www.imagemixer.com/e/sony/handycam/index.htm

Cap'n Refsmmat Posted February 25, 2005 Author Posted February 25, 2005 Does anyone know if the Windows Movie Maker is any good?
mrbc19 Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 Movie maker is really simple, almost to the point that I find it pretty bad software. You can get a 30 day trial of Sony Vegas 5 at the sony website, and that is really top notch software. I found it very easy to learn, and you can just use its simple features, or get more in depth with key frames and color correction if thats what you want.
bloodhound Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 I would definitely go with VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod ( modified to be compatible with stuff like .ogm and .mkv) Both are open source. Handy for creating .avi's , splitting them , joining up and many other advanced stuff. You can also add your subtitles to avi using the textsub filter. First you will have to learn up how to create .srt or .ssa subtitles. For most your stuff. VitrualDub will definitely get the job done.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted March 12, 2005 Author Posted March 12, 2005 Well, I need to do MPEGs. My editor just died on me, so what can I do? VirtualDub doesn't seem to be working right. Vegas doesn't want to open MPEGs.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted March 12, 2005 Author Posted March 12, 2005 Can I burn avi onto a DVD? MPEGs are what the camera gives me.
Dave Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 You can burn pretty much anything onto DVD as long as you have the proper codecs for it. Most of the DVD authoring software will automatically transcode the video into MPEG2 for you anyway. Also, your camera probably gives you MPEG1 instead of MPEG2, so you'd have to do this anyway. FreeDV is a bit of a beast, but you can run it on 512mb quite easily as long as you don't start doing anything *too* drastic. Try it and see what you think.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted March 14, 2005 Author Posted March 14, 2005 Okay, but since I did some titles on my other one that died, I'll have to use both (on different computers). Bleh. Unless FreeDV does titles.
