The question is find the temperature for the normal boiling point in the phase diagram of the pure substance above.

I thought the answer would be 90 C because that is where the liquid/gas line hits 1 atm.

 

But apparently the answer is 44 C. Why?

You haven't labelled the regions in the diagram, so I am assuming they refer to the standard solid/liquid/gas states and there are no alternative forms shown.

 

Since the 1 atm is above the triple point there is no direct sublimation at normal pressure and you would be correct in deducing 90C from the diagram.

 

so either this is the wrong diagram or there is something else wrong with the question.
