Phi for All Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 ! Moderator Note Moved from The Lounge to Mathematics. I want to invent a mathematics theoryI have been trying for several yearsBut, I can get any result Can you describe what you've been working on? Theories rely on mathematical models, but usually start out as hypotheses until a lot of review, tests, modeling, more review, and more tests result in NOT refuting the hypothesis. Then we start calling it a theory, when it's as strong and foundationally sound as we can make it.
ajb Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 (edited) I want to invent a mathematics theory Do you mean by mathematics theory a body of knowledge about some specific branch of mathematics? Meaning you want to discover some new area of investigation within mathematics? If so not many people really invent such a thing, a few great mathematicians do this, while most of us work in new things within such a branch. Edited June 30, 2014 by ajb
Acme Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) It might be useful to differentiate between 'theory' and 'theorem' in regards to mathematics. theory 3. A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics. theorem 2. Mathematics A proposition that has been or is to be proved on the basis of explicit assumptions Often times a 'proposition' is referred to as a conjecture. Once a conjecture is proven, it can properly be referred to as a theorem. In practice, this may vary. Properly speaking, Fermat's-last-theorem was just a conjecture until Wiles proved it, even though it was historically referred to as a theorem. With that out of the way, one 'invents' a proposition or conjecture by making some [unique] observation on mathematics that is true insofar as all examples looked at. If one then can prove it, it becomes a theorem. Edited July 1, 2014 by Acme

Take a look at current theory and see if something new can be developed. EDIT: Also, take a look at unsolved problems in Mathematics. Many new fields of Mathematics are produced from these. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_mathematics Edited July 1, 2014 by Unity+
