so a photon goes at the speed of light, but does anything that goes at the speed of light have to be a photon? could you have some other object which has the property it goes at/faster than light, has no mass but isn't the usual EM field oscillations that make up light?

All massless particles travel at c; Not all massless particles are photons. There are also gluons and, potentially, gravitons as changes in gravity also propagate at c.
