mriver8 Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 On either side of my family which is rare but 100 percent true.
Basic Biology Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I'm not aware of any tests for baldness genes. It is a genetic trait but I'm not sure if baldness genes have been isolated. Maybe someone else could elaborate...
/backslash/ Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I don't think anyone cares enough about testing for baldness to have isolated the gene. I would guess that significantly more biologists are working on cancer and autism.
RobertMD Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 In some diseases, it is possible. For example, in breast cancer screening and diagnostics, geneticists are able to isolate a genomic copy BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes from the host DNA via TAR (transformation-assisted recombination). The same goes in detection of Huntington's disease and retinoblastoma. However, in cases of male alopecia, I firmly believe that there isn't a specific test yet to isolate the baldness gene from your DNA and prove that you do not carry it. (anyone may correct me if I'm wrong, though) However, some studies show that if your maternal grandfather manifested with pattern baldness during his years, it poses a high risk that you also carry the gene. It's a genetic thing. For now, unfortunately, waiting is the only way to find out if you really possess the gene.
Ophiolite Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 There seems to be a certainty that this is a result of single gene. Many traits are controlled by multiple genes. I see no reason to eliminate that possibility here.
fiveworlds Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 You still have yet to prove whether any of your family ever had the baldness gene to start with. Some illness can cause baldness and chemotherapy can cause hair loss.
