I bassickly just want to plug my 56K modem into my phone jack and be able to dial numbers, answer, u=have an answering machine .etc. Is there software to do this or limited funcions like these??

There probably is. If you're running Linux you could fiddle around w/ your modem settings and see if there's any way to get output...?

Ok, maybe not.

My mom wanted VOI once and I told her NO! It uses too much bandwidth and utilizes P2P technology, which isn't all that bad for the normal user because they wouldnt recognise any diference in speed (download isn't the problem), I run servers over my connections.

I'm actually begining to dobt weather or not you can do this thing with dia-up. You'd probably have to find a special modem that didn't use any input except what you tell it to. If not, you'd probably get a bunch of fuz on the other end.

I thought, though, that you could use a dial-up modem of phreaking? I don't know, phone phreaking isn't something I know alot about. Maybe somebody else can help you more.

Yeah, we used to do it all the time when we had dial up.

Just look for some software. It's out there. You'll need a mic and speakers, too, of course.

I still think you guys dont understand what I want. I don't want to communicate between two computers. I want to communicate between my PC and a telephone WITHOUT an internet connection. I want too be able to use my PC like I use a normal telephone.

I've seen one such program before, but it was a LONG time ago. Windows 95 days. It brought up a picture of a phone. Dial the number and there you go. So there are definitely programs out there. Google it, but otherwise I can't help you.

I know what you mean, you're talking about using your modem as a tone dialler and then mic and speakers as replacements for your phone. I designed an electronics project a while back which was the same kind of thing, I made a dialler which would generate the tones which was controlled from the parallel port or a PC and had a mic and speakers attached. Essentially it was a telephone but with the dialler circuits replaced by my homemade slap-together. Modems have diallers built in and I remember one of my old ones had an earphone and microphone jack. I can’t quite remember but I think HyperTerminal (under Accessories) which comes with most Win distros should be able to control the modem dialler for you. I’m sure there is a more specialised piece of software available though.
