I believe I have a rare form of synesthesia

Recommended Posts

When I close my eyes I do not see pitch black. In fact for as long as I can remember the darkness has been bright and noisy. I've also always felt planes and other far away sounds. To me sound has a mass to it. It's as if I can actually see, hear, feel physically and emotional, all at the same time. It's seems all of my senses are completely connected in my mind's eye. If I concentrate I can project. Not only that but if I focus my attention on any muscle I can move it and control it perfectly. When I say muscle I mean every muscle, even my heartbeat! I can point my ears in any direction, control my nostrils completely and individually, raise my hair. It seems I can also raise my temperature and even affect my balance voluntarily.

All of these things my friend has confirmed are being moved by me. I am also able to control my erections and orgasms. No refractory period and can control the orgasm to be long and constant. Longest orgasm so far about 45-50 seconds, I've had up to 5 back to back non-stop same erection. I only stopped due to boredom. Orgasm is also tied to many of my senses.

Figure of speech is very obvious to me also. Creativity in all of the arts I have tried seems to come very easily. I really just write or paint what I sense in my mind's eye. I can make up complex melodies on a whim. I can make up figures of speech that just make sense. Most people tell me this should be difficult.

I do want to get an MRI but it is out of my means for now.

I don't know anyone who does.

This is often called being alive. Quite a few people (roughly seven billion) experience it on a regular basis.

Then you will be familiar with the specific figure of speech involved when I say bullshit.

Is it normal to be able to affect the heart consciously?

Sometimes it is a rare genetic condition considered to be normal in a tiny fraction of the population. Sometimes it isn't okay though and can indicate something is wrong. http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/24/6/1319.full.pdf

Some people like me can voluntarily move their ears. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24289817

What you are describing in terms of your senses is normal for individuals with Synethesia. Everyone else still mentally integrates their senses into a narrative, the senses just don't bleed into each other(though even for the majority there are exceptions to this).

You probably can't reduce your heart rate below a minimum level. A good bit is automatic to try and avoid your thoughts endangering yourself. It is also possible to simply focus/direct your thoughts and control your heart rate that way. Calling forth calm in stressful situations or summoning forth strong emotion to make people respond, is probably one of the best skills you can have.

I like to think that everyone has something unique about themselves. Don't want to harp on differences too much though.

Thank you so much. This is exactly what I am able to do.

I learned how to direct my ears towards sound last night. Actually if I focus I can pretty much move any muscle, I seem to also be able to cause veins to contract. Also if I concentrate really hard on the feeling of touch my skin will react by tensing up in just that nickel size spot, if I hold focus too long it leaves a hickey.

Yes. When I was at school we were not allowed to leave exams before the full three hours were up. I would spend the time sitting there trying to see how low and then I could get my heart rate to go just by thinking about it. It was many decades go but I think I got it down to about 60 and then back up to 80.

If it is bullshit how am I able to control my parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems to lower or raise my heart rate?

I answered one of my own question.

I did not say your ability to raise and lower your heart rate was bullshit. Apparently the ability is less common than I thought. I assumed, apparently mistakenly, that I was normal in being able to do this. If your cited paper is representative of the evidence on this point then it is not a universal ability. I stand corrected. The range of heart rate you mention (20 bpm) is comparable with what I would achieve, running between 45 and 60.

The rest of what you were saying has the appearance of bullshit. It sounds very much like someone screeching "look at me I'm different and quite wonderful". That's what I called bullshit on.

This would be the type of claim I would expect to see some supporting evidence for. I can't imagine anyone who could do this NOT setting up a video experiment with external verification.

I will make a video.

this is how it seems to you, but have you ever tried having someone help you test this hypothesis to see if that is how it really is? have you done it in front of people or a doctor? i'm having a hard time imagining someone doing this, mostly because this is quite the claim and i've personally not read or experienced such phenomena. a video would be interesting.

i don't know where this discussion is supposed to lead if anywhere.

I can seemingly lower my heart-rate, but not raise it. Isn't that just called relaxation?
