slashbane Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I'm curious to know if there is a way to measure nutrition. Say I ate a apple, is there a way to measure the effect of that apple in my body? Any help is appreciated Thanks!
Phi for All Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Comprehensive testing might not be cost-effective, but you could test something like blood sugar levels after eating an apple fairly easily. What exactly are you looking for? Nutrition can be measured in many ways. 1

I'm trying to measure the nutritition of eating say a GMO Apple compared to a organic Apple.
Phi for All Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Hey Phi, sorry I didn't respond earlier. I'm trying to measure the nutritition of eating say a GMO Apple compared to a organic Apple. Where would you find a GMO apple? Iirc, if the Arctic variety is forced to bear a GMO label, it will be because it's materially different from other varieties. I don't know for certain, but I would assume that means nutritionally different as well. Although it makes sense that any differences nutritionally would most likely be in the GMO apple's favor, like more antioxidants that get ingested. FWIW, there's no difference nutritionally between organic apples and non-GMO apples. Same amounts of potassium, carbs, fiber and sugars. The differences most people cite between them aren't reflected nutritionally.
Manuel Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I have a question about the apple? Why was it modified? Will those modifications to that apple effect me in any way that my body might not recognize whatever was tampered with? I want to understand if gmo is ok to eat? I see so many labels that say non-gmo when I go to the grocery store just curious?

I think the controversy revolves around whether we're doing something "unnatural" when we change nature for the better. As a species, we have incredible capabilities for adapting the world around us to our needs, maybe more so than any other animal. Some people draw a line that can't be crossed when they feel our adaptations thwart some kind of imagined natural order. Some people think chemicals are unnatural. GMO apples will be modified to last longer in the store, be hardier in transit, and at least the Arctic variety will resist browning, which is the main reason many people throw out apples uneaten. Many of the modifications are for the supply-side benefits, but some address demand-side concerns as well. Above all, the fruit still has to be delicious and nutritious. Will there be repercussions down the road, like Monsanto's rBGH products? It's entirely possible. Education is the key here, rather than knee-jerk reactions and misinformation. Genetic modification is a tool, a powerful one, so we need to watch out what people are doing with these tools. But don't blame the tool itself.
Manuel Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I just do not want a chemical reaction in my body to effect me any way that might cause certain allergies or disease? I just want to have a say if I want to eat this apple or not before gmo becomes normal, I think right now if someone offered me for free to genetically modify me I would want have that choice to do it or not. Even if means living another 100 years I always want to have a choice not by law or by force because science knows whats best for me even if it became normal to modify people. Don't get me wrong I'm all for advancements in technology and I'm open to anything that might improve all of our lifes. I read the thread organic farming here somewhere and it seems to me from reading it that we are going towards gmo being the normal. I'm worried that this gmo might be pushed on to me no matter what because I have no choice because it will be all over every supermarket even if I wanted to grow my food it will all eventually be modified.
John Cuthber Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 (edited) Do you take the same view on different varieties of apples? For example are you concerned that Golden Delicious may be harmful even though Cox's Orange Pippins are not? Edited November 10, 2014 by John Cuthber
