A memory that stores a 'bit' by the presence or absence of a single silicon atom has been developed by physicists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US and the University of Basel in Switzerland. Franz Himpsel's team created the device - made from silicon and gold - which has a storage density of 250 terabits per square inch
