Attitude in posts (split from Big Bang and Ether)

perhaps intelligence can come in the form of understanding?

how can you expect that of someone without a phd?

WE are supposed to encourage new ideas and sometimes that means walking them through without telling them to submit.

unless we all need phd brownies or something.

not to offend anyone but really?

i expect understanding from our elite group.

perhaps intelligence can come in the form of understanding?

Obviously I am not intelligent enough as I don't understand that.

Now I am further confused. I lack understanding and a PhD, and have growing reservations about my intelligence.

I don't know who WE are, or who it is we are asking to submit. My confusion deepens by the second. I do know that it is wrong to encourage all new ideas. Ideas that have a basis in reality and that do not fly in the face of sound observations should certainly be encouraged. The idea that ones personal incapacity to understand a concept grants you the right to offer alternatives is not one I would vote for.

What?

We have an elite group?

All of this is horribly off-topic, but it would be nice to know what the hell you were talking about.

this is exactly the attitude we dont need here.

if we chase half the visitors away with our dryness, then we leave them with the idea that we are socially inept.

i know better.

science is not about being correct.

it is about discovery.

I am unlikely to be persuaded that using Arguments from Incredulity is ever an appropriate approach on a science forum. Later you say that science is not about being correct, but about discovery. Discovery based upon logical fallacies is unlikely to be true discovery.

if we chase half the visitors away with our dryness, then we leave them with the idea that we are socially inept.

Several members here are scientists. Social ineptness is on the job description. :)

(Friendly tip: don't follow up remarks about social ineptness with claims that "I know better." It is liable to break members' irony meters.)

science is not about being correct.

it is about discovery.

And that discovery requires effort. Several concepts in science are neither intuitive, or straightforward. To pretend otherwise does a disservice to just about everyone. The attitude "I don't understand it, so I don't believe it" is completely at odds with the scientific method. I passionately wish for more people to embrace an interest in science, but not while pretending it is something else. Discovery comes through effort and open-mindedness, not unjustified scepticism and laziness.

@Moderators: Apologies: I've sidetracked the discussion, as I believe there was an important point to make. You may wish to split off the relevant posts.

relax, im not here to break any meters.

i completely understand how frustrating it can be.

i have even come very close to being called a liar.

argumentation comes hand in hand with collaboration.

i try to enjoy rediscovering all those things that drew me to science.

science is a labor of love for me.

i like to discover it again with them.

I agree Science is about discovery, but surely you cannot discover something that is incorrect?

I would add that Science is about a whole lot more than mere discovery, important though that is.

Words or phrases like application, codification, connection to other discoveries, recording, postulation, prediction come to mind.

absolutely.

i just think that sending people off with a stick and no knowledge is a bad idea.

i spend quite a bit of time during my day explaining complex things to people that will never have a clue regardless of how i put it.

irritating to say the least.

When a member chooses, deliberately, to ignore the knowledge they are offered then use of a stick becomes a viable option. And do note that the sticks are purely metaphorical, whereas the choice to ignore the knowledge is entirely real.

.

.Yes! So do I .

I am just trying to pick myself up , from being flattened, for attempting discovery! And attempting to discuss it !

On one of the leading , yet undiscovered areas of science to date .

.

- " The problem of Quantum Gravity , the rationalisation from the very Small to the very Large ...

. - all I said was - " Empty Sphere " . ..... And... " Photon "

.

Yes. Mike, all you said was "empty sphere" and "photon". THAT's the problem. You had no way to connect the idea with any way to make it science. WAGs that use a couple of scientific terms are not enough to qualify as something worthy of discussion in the speculations forum.

And in case you are tempted: We are not going to rehash anything about that thread here.

I don't have a PhD. I just took the time to learn physics before trying to come up with my own theories. People should be encouraged to learn, not to develop vague convoluted "theories." If you're frustrated by the responses you're receiving, you should take it as an encouragement to learn more. But most importantly, ask questions before making statements.
